How Najeeba met Clay…
I was set up to meet Clay by a mutual friend. While working in the ER, I had a friend named, Jodi, who invited me to a deck party back on June 12th 2005. At that time, Jodi was dating one of Clay's good friends. The plan was for all four of us to go on a double date but we didn't have a chance.
It really was not love at first sight at the deck party...it was actually awkward. Everyone knew that we were going to be meeting that day. Once Clay walked into the room...I really didn't know what to say outside of "hello."
The night went on...Clay went home to prepare for work the following day...but we later spoke in the phone...and the rest is history. We were inseparable from then on...we spent a lot of time together. After only a few weeks of dating, we went on a world-wind trip to New York City for a long weekend. We saw a Broadway show called The Producers and we toured the top of the Empire State Building. We also went on a ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty. We realized we loved to explore things together.
After five months, I introduced Clay to Marcellus. He was intimidated by Clay because of his deep voice that he had heard on the phone. Marcel was "my little man" for many years. Although he wanted us to be a family, he didn't want anyone taking my heart from him. Over time, they learned to understand each other and the role but they played in my life. Marcel once wrote to Clay that he was "the purest form of a father that he had ever had." Clay is the epitome of the man that I want Marcel to be...honest, loyal, dependable and honorable. He has been an amazing role model for an amazing young man that we are raising.
We were engaged in March of 2006 which was only after nine months of dating. Clay invited me out to dinner to Old Town Alexandria. We ate at a historic restaurant named The Wharf. We had eaten there on our first dinner date. Clay later walked me down to the waterfront and got down on one knee. He was very nervous to give away an expensive ring and to make such a huge commitment. We were married on November 24th of 2006.
On April 9th of 2007, we welcomed Ariana Madeline Brown into our family and our hearts. She was cute, playful and stubborn. After four months of training, she wouldn't take a bottle. Poor, tired and frustrated Clay would drive Ariana twice (sometimes three times) every week to the hospital to be breastfed...thankfully it was only a few miles away. This was difficult and anxiety-provoking for the both of us. Nonetheless, our marriage survived this stage and Ariana was finally weaned off the bottle at 18 months.
We have traveled quite a bit to the Caribbean and surrounding areas...Mexico, Bahamas, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos and Bermuda. This is not to mention...many beach trips like Myrtle, Ocean City, Outer Banks, Cape May and Virginia Beach. Clay loves to ski and we have visited many ski resorts in Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia...Jack Frost and Big Boulder, Wisp, White tail, Ski Liberty, Seven Springs, and Snowshoe. We have traveled to many cities like Miami, New York, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs, Chicago, Montreal, New Orleans and Atlantic City. We love to travel and every time we came home we would say...thank goodness we made it back safely...we did not lose anyone and no one got hurt.
Our family has grown along with our love...while Marcel is completing his third year of college; Ariana is completing her third year of elementary school. Both children are thriving and continue to be willful making our household very interesting.
Over ten years we have survived disagreements over finances, family and fair distribution of housework. We have sustained the "terrible twos" with Ariana, "teenage years" with Marcel, grad school, home disasters, competing careers and schedules. We have endured Run Amuck, Spartan and Tough Mudder races together as a team although I could lap Clay around the course if I chose to. And we even overcame the infamous seven year itch.
In last decade...we have learned to love each other in a way that we could never have imagined...in a world that that is so fast-paced and ever-evolving making lasting marriages a notion of the past. With more lines around our eyes, grey hairs on our heads and growing aches and pains...we are learning to be more patient and appreciating the simple things around us. We believe that we have a love that is very special and it will endure the test of time
We are so excited to be working with Najeeba and Clay on their vow renewal to Beaches Negril (one of our favorite resorts!) and are looking forward to getting to know each of you over the coming months!
